Pick the wrong cable and your Starlink Mini will drop out, reboot or refuse to start, usually at the worst possible moment. Here's how to choose the right one for your setup.
The short version
| Your situation | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| Mostly using it while driving | A quality 12V cable will usually do, because the alternator keeps the voltage up. A step-up adaptor is still the safer choice. |
| Using it parked up at camp | A step-up adaptor. This is where plain 12V cables struggle. |
| A mix of both | A step-up adaptor, for peace of mind when you stop. |
| Long cable runs (5m+) | A step-up adaptor, definitely. |
| Permanent install in a work ute or truck | A hardwire kit with a switch. |
Why the cable matters so much
The Mini accepts 12–48V, so 12V should be fine, right? Mostly. The catch is that "12V" is rarely 12V at the dish:
- Battery sag: a full battery sits around 12.6V with the engine off and drops under load.
- Cable loss: every metre of cable loses a little voltage, and thin cable loses more.
- Connection loss: every plug and join costs a little more. A loose cig plug can cost a lot.
- The start-up surge: the Mini briefly pulls up to about 60W, or 5 amps at 12V, while it boots. That's the moment marginal power fails.
A step-up adaptor gets around all of this by raising the voltage before it travels up the cable. Higher voltage means less current, so far less is lost on the way.
Cable length
| Cable run | Plain 12V cable | With a step up |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3m | Usually OK with a healthy battery | Rock solid |
| 3–5m | Marginal, depends on battery and cable | Rock solid |
| Over 5m | Not recommended | Recommended |
Measure your run from the dish to the socket before you order, allowing for going around door seals, along the roof and down the pillar. Choose the length that reaches comfortably rather than the longest available.
Our cables
- 12V Plug & Play adaptor: step up built in, with our own circuit board. Cig Plug 3m or 5m, Ando Plug 2m or 5m.
- Anderson to Anderson lead: for the MEQ Compact Bracket with built-in step up.
- Hardwired step up converter: for permanent installs.
- Plus DC extension cables, power tool battery adapters and more in 12V power & cables.
What to look for in any cable
- Good-quality, firmly fitting connectors. A loose DC plug will cut out every time you hit a corrugation.
- Proper strain relief where the cable meets the plug.
- Cable rated for automotive and outdoor use.
- A local supplier who'll stand behind it. Ours come with a 2 year warranty.
