Magnetic mounts are the quickest way to fit a Starlink Mini: no drilling, and on or off in seconds. But magnets only grip steel, so it's worth checking your roof first.
The 30-second magnet test
Grab a fridge magnet and put it where you plan to mount your Starlink Mini.
- It grips firmly: your roof is steel. Any MEQ magnetic mount will suit.
- It slides off or won't stick: your roof is aluminium, fibreglass or composite. Add our Steel Discs, which give the magnets a steel base to grip, or choose a bolt-on rack mount.
Common surfaces that aren't magnetic
- Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series: aluminium roof.
- Aluminium canopies and tool boxes.
- Fibreglass canopies and truck cabs.
- Caravans and campers: most use aluminium or fibreglass composite walls and roofs.
More manufacturers are moving to aluminium panels to save weight, so if you have a newer vehicle, always do the magnet test.
Why don't magnets work on aluminium? Magnets only bond to metals that contain iron, like steel. Aluminium, fibreglass and composites contain no iron, so there's no magnetic pull no matter how strong the magnet is.
Your options
- Steel roof: MEQ magnetic mounts.
- Non-steel roof: a magnetic mount plus Steel Discs fitted with 3M VHB tape.
- Roof rack or platform: a bolt-on rack mount.
- Canopy or tool box: the Premium Permanent Roof Mount bolts down to any flat surface.
- Trucks: magnetic, Reddot and air horn mounts.
