Your Starlink plan is bought from Starlink through the Starlink app, not from us. But it's one of the most common things we're asked about across the counter, and the rules have changed a few times this year. Here's where things stand and how to avoid paying for more than you use.
Prices checked on starlink.com/au on 9 October 2026, plus changes Starlink announced during 2026. Starlink changes plans regularly, so always confirm in the app before you sign up or switch.
The plans at a glance
| Plan | From | Speed | Data | Use while driving? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standby | A$15/month | Up to about 0.5 Mbps | Unlimited at low speed | No, parked only |
| Roam 100GB | A$85/month | Full speed | 100GB, then unlimited low speed | Yes |
| Roam Unlimited | A$210/month | Full speed | Unlimited, plus 160+ countries | Yes |
Starlink Mini hardware is listed from A$289 in selected areas.
Standby: cheap insurance, not real internet
Standby keeps your account and dish active for a small monthly fee. At around 0.5 Mbps, it's roughly early-2000s ADSL. That's fine for:
- Wi-Fi calls and text messages
- Email, messaging apps and banking
- Weather, the BOM radar (slowly) and basic browsing
- Music and podcasts, once they buffer
It won't handle video streaming, video calls, big downloads or photo backups.
Roam 100GB vs Roam Unlimited
Both Roam plans run at the same speed and both work on the move. The only difference is data.
- Roam 100GB suits weekenders, couples, most remote workers and anyone who keeps an eye on streaming. When you hit 100GB you're not cut off. You drop to low speed for the rest of the month, and the app warns you at 80GB and 100GB.
- Roam Unlimited suits families on the road full-time, heavy streamers, data-heavy work, and anyone heading overseas.
Not sure? Start on 100GB. Upgrading is instant if you need it.
Switching plans without wasting money
- Upgrades happen straight away. You pay the pro-rata difference for the days left in your billing month.
- Downgrades happen at your next billing date. You keep what you've paid for until then, so request the downgrade as soon as your trip ends. You can cancel it if plans change.
- Billing runs on UTC time, so your billing day rolls over at about 10am AEST. Keep that in mind if you're switching close to your billing date.
What seasonal switching can save
Say you travel 4 months a year:
| Approach | Yearly cost |
|---|---|
| Roam 100GB all year (12 × $85) | $1,020 |
| Roam 100GB for 4 months + Standby for 8 months | $460 |
That's around $560 a year back in your pocket for a couple of taps in the app.
Already have Starlink at home?
The Residential Max plan (from A$150/month) includes discounted Roam plans for a Starlink Mini. Starlink stopped including a free Mini for new Residential Max customers in June 2026, but the Roam discount is worth checking if you've got Starlink on the house or shed and want a Mini for the ute.
| Residential plan | From |
|---|---|
| Residential 100 Mbps | A$75/month |
| Residential 200 Mbps | A$110/month |
| Residential Max | A$150/month |
Which plan should you choose?
| If you... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Travel a few months a year | Roam while away, Standby at home |
| Want a backup for when you're parked in a black spot | Standby |
| Need internet while driving (trucks, towing, touring) | Roam 100GB or Unlimited |
| Work remotely on the road | Roam 100GB, or Unlimited for heavy video calls |
| Travel full-time with kids | Roam Unlimited |
