Trucks are where a Starlink Mini really earns its keep: Wi-Fi calls home from a black-spot rest area, paperwork done from the cab, weather and road conditions out west. We supply and fit Starlink Minis for owner-drivers and fleets from the Darling Downs to Central Western Queensland. Here's what we've learnt.
Choosing a truck mount
Magnetic mounts
For trucks with a steel cab roof. The MEQ Premium Magnetic Mount and the MEQ Compact Bracket with mag feet go on and come off in seconds, with no drilling, and move easily between trucks. Many truck cabs are fibreglass, so do the fridge-magnet test first. If a magnet won't stick, add our Steel Discs or choose a bolt-on option below.
Reddot covers
For prime movers with Reddot covers, the MEQ Compact Bracket bolts straight through the cover with 4 × M8 stainless bolts, flange nyloc nuts and laser-cut, powder-coated washers. It's low profile, permanent and stays put over long highway kilometres.
Kenworth air horns
Our Kenworth air horn kit mounts the Compact Bracket to the square back of the horn. That gives the Mini a clear view of the sky without drilling into the cab. It suits square-back Kenworth horns only, so check yours before ordering.
Powering a Starlink Mini in a truck
The Mini accepts 12–48V DC. That means a truck's 24V system is actually better suited to it than a car's 12V. There's more headroom and less voltage lost along the cable. The catches are in how you connect it:
- Cig sockets in trucks are often 12V through a converter, and they can be weak or switch off with the ignition. Fine for a temporary setup, not ideal for permanent use.
- The neatest setup is hardwired, with a fuse and a dash switch so the driver can turn it on and off. We have rocker switches to suit Kenworth and Western Star dashes. See hardwire kits and switches.
- The MEQ Compact Bracket with built-in step up runs from an Anderson plug, which suits trucks with an Anderson outlet on the back of the cab.
Every truck's wiring is a little different. Give us a call before you order and we'll make sure the setup suits yours.
Your Starlink plan on the road
Since March 2026, Starlink's cheap Standby plan only works while parked. The dish switches it off once it detects movement. If you want a connection while driving, even just for Wi-Fi calls, you need a Roam plan. See Starlink plans & current prices.
