7 Starlink Mini Mistakes We See on the Road

We see the same handful of problems over and over, from grey nomads on the lap to station hands and interstate truckies. Every one is easy to avoid if you know about it before you leave.

1. Running on plain 12V when parked

This is the big one. The Mini accepts 12–48V, so 12V is right at the bottom of its range. While you're driving, the alternator holds the system around 13.5–14.4V and everything works. Park up, turn the engine off, and the battery drops to 12.6V or less. By the time that reaches the dish through a few metres of cable, it may not be enough, especially during the Mini's start-up surge of about 60W.

The signs: it works on the drive and dies at camp, it won't start, the light comes on then goes out, or it drops out when the fridge kicks in.

The fix: a step-up adaptor. Ours have our own circuit board inside. See Powering your Starlink Mini.

2. Cheap, thin cables

Thin cable loses more voltage over its length, and cheap connectors work loose on corrugations. A $15 online cable is often the reason a $500 setup keeps dropping out. Buy once, cry once: quality connectors, proper strain relief and a supplier who'll stand behind it. See Cable length & voltage drop.

3. A mount that isn't made for Aussie roads

3D-printed and lightweight plastic mounts can crack in the heat or shake loose on corrugations. Suction cups let go on hot days. MEQ mounts are cut, folded and powder-coated from high-grade aluminium on the Darling Downs, the Premium uses solid CNC-machined polycarbonate clamps, and they're backed by a 5 year warranty.

4. Cooking the dish

The Mini runs warm in direct sun. Fully enclosed covers and boxes trap the heat, and on a 40°C day the dish can shut itself down to protect itself. The tell-tale sign is that it works every morning and drops out every afternoon. Give the dish airflow. The MEQ Premium has an open underside rather than an enclosed box, so air can still move around the dish.

5. Magnetic mounts on non-steel roofs

Magnets only grip steel. That rules out the LandCruiser 300 Series roof, aluminium canopies and tool boxes, fibreglass pop-tops and most caravan roofs. Do the fridge-magnet test first. If it doesn't stick, use Steel Discs with 3M VHB tape, or a bolt-on mount. See Roof compatibility.

6. The wrong Starlink plan

Residential plans are tied to one address. Travelling needs a Roam plan. And since March 2026, the cheap Standby plan only works while parked, so if you want internet while driving, you need Roam. See Starlink plans & current prices.

7. Not checking before you drive off

Make it a habit at every stop: mount secure, cable tidy and tied down, nothing rubbing. Take magnetic mounts off before a car wash. And don't leave the dish sitting on the ground or a camp table unattended. It only takes a second for it to walk off.

Before you leave: quick checklist

  • Step-up adaptor for use when parked
  • Quality cable, the right length
  • A solid mount with a clear view of the sky
  • Airflow around the dish
  • Steel Discs if your roof isn't steel
  • Roam plan active and tested at home
  • Wi-Fi calling turned on on your phones
